Punakha Dzong, also known as the Palace of Great Happiness, is one of the most majestic and historically significant fortresses in Bhutan. Located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu (male river) and Mo Chhu (female river) in the Punakha District, it stands as a stunning example of Bhutanese architecture.
Built in 1637–1638 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the dzong served as the administrative and religious center of Bhutan for many years. It is the site of the coronation of Bhutan’s kings and hosts significant religious festivals, including the annual Punakha Tshechu and the Domchoe.
The dzong is known for its intricate woodwork, towering white walls, and richly adorned prayer halls. Surrounded by jacaranda trees that bloom in spring, Punakha Dzong offers a serene and awe-inspiring experience, making it a popular destination for visitors to Bhutan.
